December 2011 Update

In our last full self-study on WASC in September 2009, we identified areas of growth and subsequently developed five action plans. These action plans address the following areas:

1. ESLRs Action Plan – Develop benchmarks, activities and assessments for all ESLRs at all grade levels.

2. Academic Support Action Plan – Expand support services for students through more differentiated instruction and support services for students  outside the classroom.

3. Quran Curriculum Action Plan – Review and enhance the Quran curriculum to maximize the benefits for student accomplishment of the ESLRs.

4. Physical Education Action Plan – Implement a standards-based physical education program, staff development and after-school sports.

5. Long-term Resource Planning – Develop plans in order to meet our current and long-term resource needs.

Since September 2009, GIS staff and teachers have been working on these action plans and all their progress and accomplishments will be reported in our mid-term visit report. The last full visiting committee also left us with some critical areas of follow-up. Some of these critical areas were included in our five action plans and have already been addressed. The critical areas not included in the action plans include development of an administrative structure for the after-school program, providing students with more outreach and leadership opportunities to develop those skills needed for later immersion in the Muslim and mainstream communities, reviewing staff salary schedule and benefits and some others. These critical areas have also been addressed during the past two years. For a complete list of these critical areas, please check this webpage.

Accreditation by WASC

Granada Renews Its Accreditation Status with WASC

In June 2009, Granada Islamic School renewed a six-year term of accreditation by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) after an extensive 18-month self-study. The school is currently implementing the six-year action plan that resulted from the self-study (Action Plan 2009-15).

General Comments (from the WASC Visiting Committee Report p. 24)

The visiting committee was impressed with the program at GIS. The collegiality of the staff towards each other and their warm, welcoming manner towards the community and guests is commendable. It is obvious that a great deal of work went into the self-study and that it accurately represents the state of the school. The following areas of strength and areas of growth are not listed in any particular order of priority.

What is WASC?

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (http://www.acswasc.org/) is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States. It extends its services to a variety of public and private schools.

Why is accreditation important?

  • The accreditation process validates the integrity of a school’s program and student transcripts.
  • Accreditation fosters excellence and ongoing improvement in public and private schools.
  • The accreditation process assures a school community that the school’s purposes are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable educational program.
  • Accreditation helps a school to establish its priority areas for improvement.

Please check the following PowerPoint presentation for summary information on the Accreditation process: GIS Accreditation.
