To address the needs of students to have a solid background in Science aligned with the CA State Standards, the Science curriculum has undergone many changes. The textbooks for grades Six to Eight were reviewed and were changed to the Prentice Hall Science Explorer Focus on Science series California edition in the year 2000. Similarly, for the grades Kindergarten to Five, the textbooks were reviewed and since 2001, we have adopted the Houghton Mifflin Discovery Works California edition.

Starting in Kindergarten, students learn about a variety of topics through the Scientific Method. The Science curriculum from grades Kindergarten to Five builds on important areas in Life, Physical and Earth Sciences. In addition to the CA Science Content Standards, students in grade Kindergarten learn about the identification of body parts and their function and importance. Similarly, First grade students learn about the importance of good nutrition, exercise, sleep and proper hygiene. Second grade students learn about germs, the cause of illnesses and their prevention and how to stay healthy.

The Sixth grade Science curriculum is focused on Earth Science. Islamic teachings are integrated by referencing verses in the Quran regarding plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes. In Seventh grade, the focus is on Life Science. Students also learn about the teachings of Islam concerning evolution and the human body. Teachers take into account the different levels of sensibilities of students when teaching human reproduction. Thus, boys are separated from girls and a different teacher instructs each group. In Eighth grade, the emphasis is on Physical Science. Moreover, students learn about the influence of Muslim scientists and their contribution to scientific discoveries, for instance the elements in the Periodic Table.

In addition, many hands-on activities are integrated in the science curriculum; students in grades Five to Eight use the science laboratory at least twice a week for experiments or for teachers demonstrations while lower grades students have their activities in their classrooms or in the patio area.

Science Fair projects hold an important place in our curriculum. Students learn and apply the Scientific Method to explore various topics. All students in grades Four to Eight present their projects in the classroom and the ten best projects from each grade are chosen for the GIS Science Fair. The finalists then compete at the next level in the Synopsys Science & Technology Championship (aka Santa Clara County Science Fair).
