Students in grades Kindergarten to Six have scheduled time for the library each week. The librarian reads aloud to the class, and then allows them to choose books for 15-20 minutes of independent reading. The librarian also uses this time to teach students about the different parts of a book, different types of books, and to treat books with care and respect. Children are offered Picture Books, Traditional Literature, Poetry, and Early Readers.
Grades One to Six visit the library one period each week and choose books to read and borrow. They learn how to find and use fiction, non-fiction, reference, and Islamic Studies materials in the library. The student search station enables students to find materials in the electronic catalog using key word searches of author, title, or subject. The librarian introduces the children to new books through book talks and displays. The primary goal of our library program is to introduce children to different kinds of literature for pleasure reading. We also support the curriculum with non-fiction and reference, but funds are limited and the students depend on the public libraries for additional resources.
Grades Seven and Eight visit the library when scheduled by the teacher, or individually with permission. Some of these upper grade students check books out regularly, and others rarely use the library. A volunteer library student from San Jose State teaches research methods, beginning Internet searching, and electronic database use to upper grade students. Since 2002-03, all sixth through eighth graders had these classes.
