Third Graders write in social studies, English and Islamic Studies:
3A students are studying about the different Native American Tribes that lived in America long before the Europeans laid claim to this land. We are learning interesting information about these tribes and their culture and beliefs, through a variety of hands-on projects and these are some samples of student work.
3B students worked on writing a personal narrative. They used effective beginning, an organized and focused middle, and a satisfying ending. The students used descriptive details to clearly describe objects, emotions and settings.
3C students learned about acrostic poems in Language Arts and we decided to incorporate our “Classroom Community Building” into our poems. We picked a fellow student to write a poem about. Each student did a survey about themselves and this was given to the student writing the poem about them. I was so impressed by their reaction to this activity. Each student wrote many nice adjectives about their partner and we have grown stronger in our community. It was hard to choose only 3 poems….they all did so wonderful!

Seventh Graders Write Letters to a Publisher
As they studied the unit on Islam in Social Studies, 7th graders applied critical thinking skills in evaluating the information presented in their textbook. In doing so, they wrote letters to the editors and publisher of the book, noting their observations and providing suggestions. Here are three samples.

Fifth Graders Develop Important Writing Skills
By Kim Wright - 5th grade language arts and social studies teacher
The fifth graders are learning to live the life of a writer this year as they experience the complete writing process—from brainstorming to publishing. They are finding that inspiration may spring from the most mundane sources, whether it’s an ordinary day at school, a pet, or a favorite hobby. Students are learning how to add voice, style, and sensory details to make their writing come alive. They are also learning that writing is hard work, requires constant improvement, and involves skillful organization and the ability to meet deadlines.
So far students have completed several writing projects in Language Arts and Social Studies. The work we have chosen to share with our newsletter readers includes research, poems, and essays about our pet banana slug, some reflections on what it’s like to be a fifth grader, and a sampling of our personal narrative essays.
