7th Grade Hope Visit

On April 26th, 7th graders visited Hope Services as part of outreach and service learning. They had initially planned to spend their time playing games with the Hope clients, or teaching them arts and craft. However, the Hope clients were working on the very specific job of removing labels off spice bottles, so the 7th graders decided to help them complete it. Following the visit, they had a reflection activity in Qur’an class, connecting their experience to lessons learned from Surah Luqman. Below are some excerpts:

Blessings by Sarah Abouelseoud

Allah (SWT) has blessed with a lot,

& it is my duty to teach what I have been taught,

So listen close & don’t be weary

Listen here to my story.

I went to Hope to help and play

But some things didn’t go our way.

So we ended up working with our new friends,

A hand we were willing to lend.

Some people we saw didn’t seem quite right,

But they turned out to be alright.

I’m thankful Allah gave me sight,

Or else, walking would be quite a fight.

I’m thankful Allah gave me a hand,

That is, of course, under my command.

But what I’m thankful for the most,

And I don’t mean to boast,

I got to go to Hope!

Serving Allah by Serving others
On the authority of Abu Hurairah (radiAllaahu anhu) that the prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Resurrection. And whoever alleviates the need of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his need sin this world and the Hereafter. Whoever shields [or hides the misdeeds of] a Muslim, Allah will shield him in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah will aid His slave as he aids his brother."

Serving Allah by Serving Others is the Living Islam theme for the third trimester. Cahracter Education and Islamic Studies teaching objectives merge once again to help students put their faith into action.

Over the next two months, Granada students will have a chance to serve our school community, our neighbors, and children overseas. Taking inspiration from the above hadith, Isalmic studies teachers and students will discuss the responsibility of each Muslim to serve. Students will have a chance to reflect and act upon this important principle both inside and outside the classroom and at home. The focus for our chidlren is awareness and intention, not only the amount of giving.

Second Harvest Canned Food Drive

“And do not forget to do good to one another.” (2:238)

‘Islam in action' aptly describes the wave of excitement in young, enthusiastic, and compassionate Granadians when they served their needy neighbors by donating cans during the week of Second Harvest Canned Food Drive(March 26-30). For the first time, G.I.S. has partnered up with Second Harvest Food Bank which is one of the largest food banks in the nation that provides food to an average of nearly one quarter of a million people each month.

The Canned Food Drive took place in conjunction with the Living Islam program that strives to provide opportunities to Granadians to put their Islam into action by helping others. Students in all grades were encouraged to bring canned and boxed foods to school. The GIS Student Council and 6th grade class organized the event. Besides collecting, counting and sorting cans, they also played a key role in motivating other students.

The goal was to achieve a school wide total of 2000 cans. Masha’Allah, thanks to all the support from generous parents and the efforts of dedicated Granadians, G.I.S. was able to collect a total of 3000 cans in just one week!
