Reading Day - Feb 29

Character Connection

Reading Day at GIS is an annual tradition that celebrates reading for fun!  The goal of Reading Day is to emphasize the importance of reading, and to encourage students to read more, and to read different types of books

The focus for this year’s Reading Day is character.  Students will analyze characters and character traits through reading and listening to stories, making puppets and short books, as well as reading with a buddy. Insha’Allah we will have a fun-filled day, sharing our love of reading!  If you would like to volunteer for Reading Day, or help assemble materials next week, please contact Sister Doha at: DohaB@Granadaschool.org.

Arabic Spelling Bee

The main objective of the Spelling Bee competition is to improve the students’ spelling skills in Arabic while having fun.  We have noticed a great improvement in the students’ spelling since we started the competition two years ago. Students started focusing more on their spelling and are more aware of the Arabic language spelling rules.  Since the Arabic language has its own spelling uniqueness ( letter’s different shapes), the Arabic Spelling Bee is different from the English version in one aspect:  students have to write the word first, then spell it orally by saying the letters’ names, not the letters’ sounds.

Parents received the list of Arabic words on January 20. Each Arabic teacher has prepared a list of vocabulary chosen from what the students have learned, and will be sending it along with the guidelines and objectives to the parents. Grades 1-8 will participate in this competition. The first stage of the competition is on February 1, where teachers select the three finalists from each grade level (3-8). The final stage of the Arabic Spelling Bee will be during the week of February 13.

For grades 1 and 2, the format of the Spelling Bee competition this year will be different than last year. Some changes were made in order to make the competition less stressful for our younger students. First and second grade teachers will send the information on the process with the list of words by January 20 Insha’Allah.
